Methow Valley Sport Trails Association (509/996-3287, www.mvsta.com) is in northwest Washington in the town of Winthrop, which is one of the best kept secrets in the xc ski world. A network of 200 km of groomed trails for classic and skate skiing with many lodges and warming huts along the way. Lessons and rentals available at Sun Mountain Lodge, Wilson Ranch and Winthrop Mountain Sports. Sun Mountain Lodge is the best and biggest full service hotel in the Methow region (800/572-0493, www.sunmountainlodge.com) at 2,000 feet with beautiful scenic views and trails that are interconnected with the Methow Valley system. There is 360 degrees of scenic views of the Cascade Mountains and Methow Valley from the lodge. Lessons and equipment rentals for xc skiing and snowshoeing are available. The Chewuch Inn (800/747-3107, www.chewuchinn.com) is close to downtown Winthrop and its accommodations include lodge rooms and cabins.

The North Cascades Mountain Guides (509-996-3194, www.ncmountainguides.com) is in Mazama, WA and specializes in low-ratio guiding (small number of skiers to each guide). There are a variety of trips offered from one and two day excursions on telemark or AT gear to yurt trips near Harts Pass. Trips in the Cascades include Delancy Ridge, Cutthroat Basin and Silver Star Peak. The Methow Freeheel Festival will be held on March and it features clinics, demos, ski movies, guided tours, beacon contest, a slideshow and a hugh raffle.

Stevens Pass Nordic Center (206/812-4510, www.stevenspass.com) in Skykomish, WA has 28 kilometers of groomed trails. This scenic trail system takes you along the base of Jim Hill Mountain and into the heart of the Mill Valley. There are 10 km of exclusive snowshoe trails. The Cascade Depot is the area's lodge that has food, rentals, instruction and an accessory shop. Directions: Hwy 2; 5 miles east of Stevens Pass Ski Area. Open Fri-Sun & holidays 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

There are half day rates available and lessons with a Classic or Skating Packages including rentals/trail pass. A joint season pass is available to visit both Stevens Pass and Leavenworth Sports Club trails. CCSAA member

Summit Nordic Center (425/434-7669 x3530, www.summitatsnoqualmie.com) in Snoqualmie Pass, WA has 55 kilometers of groomed trails. Directions: I-90 Exit 54 at Summit East Alpine Area
