Enchanted Forest XC Ski & Snowshoe Area (575-754-6112, www.enchantedforestxc.com has 33 km of trails groomed for classic and skate skiing and 18 km for snowshoeing, and 5 km that allow dogs. Enchanted Forest is known for the entertaining events and the great scenic views in its 640 acres of ancient forests, aspen groves, and sweeping meadows in the Carson National Forest (that's Kit Carson for you history buffs).

Trail fees are $24 for skiers aged 18-59, and $22 for 13-17 and 60-69 adult. Kids under 12 and seniors over 70 are $7. There are xc ski equipment rentals and lessons available at the center. Ski and snowshoe rentals are $24 per day for those aged 18 or older, and $22 for 13-17, and $17 for 12 and under. High performance gear is also available. The pulk sled is $22 for a day. Group lesson packages (include trail pass, rental gear, and lesson) are $90 per person in the morning and $85 in the afternoon at 9:30 AM or 1:30 PM. The kids group lesson package starts at $42. Private lessons are available at $90 and $65 for each additional person. Numerous scenic views from the trails including Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico and downtown Red River.

Enchanted Forest has a day lodge for a snack and the Midway warming yurt and four rental yurts area available for overnight winter accommodations. The yurts are heated with a box wood stove and there are kitchen items. A pulk sled is available for you to transport your sleeping bags, pillows, and food. There is no running water at the yurt. Prices start at $95 per night. The Lodgers Tax is not included. No refunds on cancellations but you can select another date within a year.

Snowshoe Tour every day at 9:30 and 1:30 snowshoe rental available. Bring the dog for the 5 km of smooth groomed trails open to them to ski with you if they are under voice command. No trail fee for the dog and there are waste bags along the trail. Lodging and services are in the town, which is a step back to the Old West in the Sangre de Christo Mountains.

Nearby alpine ski areas include Taos, Angel Fire, Red River Ski Area and there is also skiing at the Wild Rivers Rec Area. Enchanted Forest is 45 minutes from Taos, 2 hours from Santa Fe or Alamosa, CO, and 3 hours from Albuquerque.
