cross country skiing and snowshoeing in Southern Vermont
The southern Vermont region stretching along Route 9 from Bennington in the west to Brattleboro in the east cuts through the southern teir of the Green Mountain National Forest. It is rich in history (Molly Stark and the Battle of Bennington), scenic views, and has so much to do, with shopping, restaurants, and night life in the towns mentioned above as well as the Wilmington area around Mt Snow, where Route 100 crosses Route 9. Some of the xc ski resorts in the region include the Hermitage, Timber Creek XC, Prospect Mountain, the White House and Windham Hill Inn.
Timber Creek (802-464-0999, www.timbercreekxc.com) has 14 km of groomed trails for classic and skating xc skiing. Cross country ski lessons and xc ski rental equipment available. Directly across from the Mt. Snow access road, Timber Creek offers a choice of adventures on a meandering trail system on forested hills or atop high Green Mountain ridges. The trails are known for excellent design and there are separate snowshoe trails, too. CCSAA member
Eddington House Inn is a boutique bed & breakfast in southwestern Vermont inn located in the Village of North Bennington and it is easily accessible to recreation and other entertainment. Prospect Mountain is 7 miles from the inn. Hermitage Cross Country Center on Coldbrook Road in Wilmington, has cross country ski trails that form a circle from the warming hut to Mount Snow and back. Advanced cross-country skiers can ski the 2.5-mile Ridge Trail connecting the Haystack and Mount Snow summits. Lessons and xc ski rental equipment available to lodge guests. White House of Wilmington Cross County Ski Center offers xc ski trails skewed toward the intermediate Nordic skier. There are rental skis available. The White House has 27 rooms and breakfast and dinner meals are available.
Prospect Mountain XC Ski Center in Woodford, VT has 30 km of groomed trails for classical and skating cross country skiing with lighting, lessons, rentals. It also has a backcountry trails system and snowshoe trails. CCSAA member
Windham Hill Inn in West Townshend, VT is on 160 acres with 10 km of groomed trails for classic xc skiing. This is a quiet retreat in a natural setting where guests can relax and unwind. Guests can use available xc ski and snowshoe equipment at no charge.There are 21 rooms at the inn and fine dining. Windham Hill has a great hill for tobagganing on site and 3 tobaggans to use. Nearby there are many other xc ski resorts with groomed trails and services and recreation in the Green Mountain National Forest and local state parks. There is alpine skiing at Mt. Snow, Stratton Mountain, Magic Mountain and Bromley Mountain.
